Nickel-Metal Hydride (Ni-MH, NiMH) rechargeable batteries are the next level up from Nicad. They offer up to 40% more capacity per volume than Nicad. They are also more environmentally friendly. Nickel-Metal Hydride batteries offer most of the same features as Nicad. One drawback to the Ni-MH design is the rapid loss of charge, known as self-discharge, that amounts to a dead cell within a month just sitting in storage

For new Ni-MH batteries, you should cycle them three to five times to reach peak performance. Battery cycling can be accomplished by using the batteries and recharging them, or using a battery conditioner.
At room temperature, Ni-MH batteries will self-discharge in around 30 to 60 days. You should recharge the batteries before using them if left sitting for any length of time. It is normal for batteries to be fully depleted of power after long term storage. After extended storage, you may need to cycle the batteries a few times to obtain nominal performance.
Ni-MH batteries are "memory free". They can charged anytime you wish, regardless if the batteries are fully drained or not. Memory is a problem of traditional Ni-Cd batteries. Normally with Ni-Cd's you would have to fully drain the batteries before recharging them.
